Common questions

What to expect when beginning therapy

You do not need to know exactly what to say or have a perfectly defined goal before reaching out.

How do I know whether therapy is right for me?

You may be dealing with distress that has become difficult to manage, or you may simply recognize that familiar patterns are limiting your life. A consultation is an opportunity to describe what is happening and consider whether therapy, and my approach in particular, seems appropriate.

What happens during an initial consultation?

We talk about what brings you in, what you hope might change, and any experience you have had with therapy. You can ask questions about my approach, scheduling, fees, and current availability. We also begin to get a sense of whether working together feels possible.

What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic therapy pays attention to present difficulties, emotional experience, relationships, and the ways earlier experiences may continue to influence current life. The aim is not only symptom relief, but greater freedom from patterns that operate outside awareness.

How long does therapy take?

There is no single timetable. Some people arrive with a focused concern, while others want to work more broadly and deeply. We can discuss what you are looking for and revisit the direction of the work as therapy develops.

Do you meet in person or by telehealth?

My office is in Midtown Manhattan. Contact me to discuss current availability and whether in-person or remote sessions would fit your circumstances.

What do sessions cost? Do you accept insurance?

Please contact me for the current fee and insurance information. If you have out-of-network benefits, you may be able to submit statements for partial reimbursement. Your insurer can explain the specifics of your plan.

What if I am not sure what is wrong?

That uncertainty can itself be a useful place to begin. Therapy can help you put language to experiences that have felt confusing, contradictory, or difficult to organize.

Can I use the contact form in an emergency?

No. The form and email are not monitored for emergencies. If you may harm yourself or someone else, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room.
